Torino and Lecce were locked at 0-0 in their Serie A fixture at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino on Saturday, with the home side controlling the ball but unable to find an opening against a disciplined Lecce defence, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport's live coverage. The match, refereed by Ermanno Feliciani of the Teramo section, kicked off later than scheduled because of problems with the pitch. Before play began, a minute of silence was observed for Jesús de Miguel.
La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Torino held the ball for the opening phase while Lecce dropped deep into their own half and defended in an orderly shape. The visitors' resistance centred on goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone, who came off his line early to smother a through ball intended for Bragança after a neat exchange between Kulenovic and Simeone. Falcone was also quick off his line to deal with a low cross from Cacciamani.
Why it matters
The result, as it stood, carried weight at both ends of the table. Torino entered the match tenth and Lecce fourteenth, three points apart, a gap that gives the fixture significance in the fight for survival and in the push toward the European places. Form made the stakes sharper still: Abate's Torino had lost their previous two matches, against Como and Frosinone, after winning three in a row, while Di Francesco's Lecce had been beaten in four of their last five Serie A games, including a 5-1 defeat at Frosinone and a 2-1 loss at Genoa in the most recent round.
Early chances and a flashpoint
Torino's territorial control did not translate into clear chances. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Fitz-Jim won the ball in midfield and fed Kulenovic, but the lay-off toward Simeone ran too long. At the other end, Perri produced a reflex save to keep out Gallo's corner, which was curling toward goal, and was not beaten. Belghali, who had returned to the field, was pushed by Gallo in midfield and needed treatment from Torino's medical staff.
Fatah briefly won possession from Ismajli, but Torino's defence recovered and cleared the danger. Bragança and Fitz-Jim continued to circulate the ball in midfield in search of space as Lecce held their shape.
Line-ups and background
Di Francesco set Lecce up in a 3-5-1-1: Falcone in goal; Danilo Veiga, Gaspar and Tiago Gabriel in defence; Ali Dembélé, Kaba, Ngom, Maleh and Gallo across midfield; Fatah behind Stulic. Abate chose a 3-5-2 for Torino: Perri; Comuzzo, Ismajli and Coco; Belghali, Vlasic, Bragança, Fitz-Jim and Cacciamani; Kulenovic and Simeone.
Cacciamani's return from a shoulder injury was a boost for Abate, though Mandragora remained a doubt. Lecce were without five players across attack and midfield.
La Gazzetta dello Sport notes that Torino had gone unbeaten in six of their previous eight Serie A meetings with Lecce, keeping a clean sheet in each of those six, and had recorded four consecutive home clean sheets against the visitors in the league — the longest such run of any side currently in Serie A. The match was broadcast live on DAZN and DAZN 1 for subscribers, with text coverage on Gazzetta.it.
The game was pushed back after the scheduled start because of the condition of the pitch, with Feliciani announcing shortly beforehand that play should begin within five minutes. Alessandro Costanzo and Dario Garzelli were the assistants, Andrea Calzavara the fourth official, and Mazzoleni and Camplone the VAR and assistant VAR.
What to watch: whether Torino can convert their possession into a goal against a Lecce side content to defend, and whether the visitors can hold out for a point that would matter in the table.
